Mat-building: Frankfurt, Berlín, Venecia, Kuwait, Valencia

Mat-building_panoramic«In 1974, Alison Smithson published in Architectural Design a seminal article: “How to recognise and read mat-building: mainstream architecture as it has developed towards mat-building”. A brief definition of the concept is followed by the presentation of a paradigmatic case: the Free University of Berlin, by the architects Candilis-Josic-Woods. Subsequently, a large compendium of works and projects —most of the fifties and sixties, due to the members of Team X, but also some historical precedents— reveals, for its own dispersion and plurality, the semantic breadth of an idea by then already mature, open, henceforth, to interpretation.»
